Conover's Farmers Market Moved Downtown This Year, and Its Holiday Market Now Shares a Saturday With Christmas Comes to Conover

Conover's holiday season starts downtown on Saturday, November 21. The Conover Farmers Market holds its annual Holiday Market from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on 1st Avenue S. Conover Community Partners has scheduled Christmas Comes to Conover for the same day. Ten days later, on Tuesday, December 1, the 33rd annual Christmas in the Park lights the tree at Downtown Park.

The Holiday Market is downtown this year because of a decision the market made last spring. When it moved its weekly market into the downtown blocks, its biggest event of the year moved along with it.

The Market Left the Post Office Lot

For the 2025 season, the Conover Farmers Market set up in the Conover Post Office parking lot at 201 1st St E. In April 2026, the market announced its new downtown location for its 18th season. The move was part of a citywide initiative called Conover Grows Together. The market now lists its home as 122 Second Ave SE.

The announcement gave the market's own reasons for the move. It said the relocation "strengthens the connection between local growers, makers, and the downtown business community." It also listed the benefits it expected:

  • More visibility from main streets
  • Safe pedestrian access to downtown businesses
  • More room for vendors, activities and special events
  • Closer work between merchants and market vendors

The season plan called for themed market days, live music, children's activities and promotions coordinated with downtown merchants. Christmas Comes to Conover is also built around downtown businesses, and it falls on the same Saturday as the Holiday Market.

One Saturday, Two Organizers

The Holiday Market and Christmas Comes to Conover are run by different groups, and each brings its own pieces to the day. Here is what each organizer has listed:

The market's own Holiday Market event page puts the event on 1st Ave S, so that is the address to use on November 21. Visit Hickory's listing for the Conover Holiday Market points to the market's regular address at 122 Second Ave SE instead. The market's 2026 Holiday Market post says it is the place for holiday food shopping as well as gifts. Local growers will have vegetables and fruit, and bakers will bring fresh bread and pastries for holiday meals. Artisans are listed with jewelry, textiles, pottery, woodwork, handmade candles, custom decorations and gourmet treats. If you shopped for vegetables at the market over the summer, you can also pick up the bread for Thanksgiving week here.

Christmas Comes to Conover pulls in businesses beyond the market. In its 2026–2027 calendar, Conover Community Partners calls it an annual event built around "a large variety of shopping opportunities and family fun." The partners add that farmers market vendors will join downtown businesses to show their crafts. Conover Community Partners describes itself as a nonprofit made up of local businesses and community members, with projects and events run by volunteers. Its Christmas Comes to Conover page is the place to check for times and layout before you head out.

If you have young children, both events list a chance to see Santa, so plan for a Santa stop when you set out the morning. The Holiday Market lists a Santa visit and festive photos. Christmas Comes to Conover lists a Santa's Workshop photo setup.

Ten Days Later, the Gazebo

November 21 is the shopping day. Christmas in the Park on Tuesday, December 1, is the evening event. It runs from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at 112 2nd Ave NE, and admission is free.

That address belongs to Downtown Park. The City of Conover describes the park as sitting in "the geographic and cultural heart of the City." It is across the street from City Hall and the Conover Police Department. The city calls its large gazebo "the unofficial symbol of Conover." The tree lighting happens in the park built around that gazebo, and the city says the park is easy to reach on foot or by car from downtown.

The Christmas in the Park listing lays out the evening in this order:

  1. 5:30 p.m.: Refreshments and crafts begin, with hot chocolate and cider.
  2. 6:00 p.m.: Performances, including Christmas carols.
  3. After the performances: A visit from Santa Claus.

The listing also includes letters to Santa, an activity from the Conover Branch Library and a tree lighting. The event runs 90 minutes on a Tuesday, so it fits after work and school without taking over the whole evening. The listing gives a contact number of (828) 464-1191 for questions.

For everyday use, the city lists a playground, picnic tables, benches, short walking trails, restrooms and ADA accessibility. If you have kids with you on November 21 who need a break from shopping, the playground and restrooms are good to know about.

Places Between Stops

Christmas Comes to Conover is built around downtown businesses, so a few of the places near the market's corner are part of the day too.

1877 Pub & Grub lists its address as 116 1st Ave S, on the same street the Holiday Market uses, and posts its hours on its contact page. If you plan on a sit-down lunch after the market wraps up at 2 p.m., check those hours before you go.

Narrow Gauge Coffee & Cafe is listed at 403 Conover Station SE, with café offerings and hours Tuesday through Saturday. Its Saturday hours put it on the map for a coffee before the 10 a.m. start, and its Tuesday hours could cover a stop on the way to the December 1 tree lighting.

Conover Station is also where Conover Community Partners meets and holds its roundtables, on the building's third floor. The same group that plans Christmas Comes to Conover hosts its year-round business events in the building next to the café. The partners say anyone in the community is welcome to join, with no membership fees. Each event has its own planning committee, and planning meetings are announced on the group's Facebook page.

Putting the Two Dates Together

Here is how the two dates fit together for a household planning ahead:

  • Saturday, Nov. 21, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.: The Holiday Market on 1st Ave S, with 40+ vendors, food trucks, live music and Santa.
  • Saturday, Nov. 21: Christmas Comes to Conover, with Santa's Workshop photos, a kids zone and a food truck area.
  • Tuesday, Dec. 1, 5:30 to 7 p.m.: Christmas in the Park at Downtown Park, 112 2nd Ave NE, with free admission and a tree lighting.

The market's April announcement said it wanted more shared foot traffic between vendors and merchants. This holiday calendar is the clearest example yet. The Holiday Market on 1st Ave S, the downtown businesses and Christmas Comes to Conover all fall on one Saturday, and the gazebo across from City Hall lights its tree ten days later.
